What is Sustainable Garden Design?

When they are thoughtfully designed, gardens can become important places of refuge for both people and wildlife. They can lift our mood through colour, scent and texture, offer space to relax or grow food and provide valuable habitats within the wider landscape.

To me, sustainability means much more than simply adding greenery. It means selecting the right plants for Scotland’s climate and your garden’s unique conditions, while preparing for hotter, drier periods and increasingly heavy rainfall. It also means working with what is already there, supporting healthy soils and biodiversity, choosing materials responsibly and designing a garden that can thrive without chemical input, excessive water or constant maintenance.

The result is a beautiful, resilient garden that works for you, supports nature and becomes richer over time.

How We Make It Happen

SITE VISIT

We’ll start with a visit to your garden, where I’ll measure the space and take the time to understand your needs, wants and aspirations for the garden.

2.

BESPOKE DESIGN

Using everything we learn from the site visit, I’ll develop a bespoke garden design tailored to your space and lifestyle. Once the design package is shared with you, there will be an opportunity to provide feedback and refine the design together.

3.

IMPLEMENTATION

Once the design is ready, it’s time to bring it to life. Depending on the project, this may involve planting, landscaping or a combination of both. For projects where hard landscaping is needed, I work alongside suitable local contractors to help deliver the design.

4.

ONGOING CARE

Every garden, no matter how low maintenance it is designed to be, will need some form of care throughout the seasons. As part of the design package, you will receive a detailed care plan - helping you understand how to keep your new garden thriving. If you’re based in the Cupar area, I also offer ongoing garden care to help you get started.

Pricing

  • Garden design services are charged at £45/hour. For larger projects, I offer bespoke quotes tailored to the scope and requirements of your garden.

  • I charge £30/hour for regular and one-off garden care, including weeding, pruning, planting and seasonal tidy-ups.

  • Lawn mowing is charged at a £20 call-out fee plus £30/hour.
